In Altheim, after extensive renovation, the Roman Museum reopens - and offers unimaginable insights!

In time for the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition "The Return of the Legion", the newly erected Roman Museum Altheim will open its doors in the spring of 2018. In the so-called Ochzethaus, a picturesque farmhouse from the 19th century, visitors can get to know different aspects of Roman rural life. Under the motto "Innviertel the granary of the Roman Empire in Upper Austria", the museum informs about agriculture, animal husbandry and everyday life in a "villa rustica".

Archaeological students of the University of Salzburg, led by experienced experts, have developed a new concept for the "Römermuseum Altheim", which has existed since 1993 and is run by the association Zeitspuren with intensive efforts. Directly on the Roman Cycle Route, the Roman Museum presents itself in a new dress and informs its visitors with numerous exhibits about everyday life in the Roman province. As supply centers, it was necessary to produce sufficient food for the civilian population and the military in the province of Noricum at the large estates. In addition to farming and livestock, the visitors learn a lot about the daily life and work in the Roman Innviertel. Aspects of nutrition and clothing, but also land grabbing, strict hierarchies and dying are other topics that are illuminated in the museum exactly. The museum presents not only a collection of finds and latest research results, but understands itself, with many stations to join in and try out, more than adventure museum for young and old. What did the Romans bring and what is still present in our daily lives. The museum wants to answer such and further questions in an informative and playful way. Especially for school classes, the Roman Museum with age-appropriate placement offers is recommended as a rewarding addition to lessons.

From the bicycle saddle to the Roman era: Those who arrive by bike on the Römerradweg can use the open as well as the weather-protected rest stop directly on site. Even outside the opening hours exciting insights are granted and the museum itself becomes a showcase.

TIPP: The open air facility with the reconstructed bath of the Roman Villa Weirading is only 3 km away and can be visited at any time. The path is well signposted from the museum.
