BURG OBERNBERG, KUNSTHAUS - SEMINARHAUS

Obernberg am Inn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

What remains of the once mighty Obernberg Castle are the former castle building and a converted granary, as well as parts of the castle wall and the north tower.

The existing buildings were stylishly renovated in 2015 and now house an ART HOUSE and a SEMINAR HOUSE. The spacious and well-tended gardens (with historic baroque garden) are freely accessible and offer a wonderful view of the Inn and neighbouring Bavaria.

The first castle complex was built by the Counts of Formbach in the 10th century(Upper Castle). Obernberg was ceded by the Counts of Formbach and their successors, the Counts of Andechs, to the Bishopric of Passau in 1191. Bishop Wolfker had Obernberg converted into an almost impregnable fortress between 1199 and 1202.In 1241, the Muhringers (Meinhard von Mörringen) of Eberschwang attacked the fortress and market town of Obernberg. Duke Frederick II of Austria was able to take the castle in 1243 after a siege by treachery. The castle's guardianship was transferred to Counts Ulrich and Wernhart von Schaunberg.
