The famous surgeon Prof Dr Johann Finsterer (1877-1955) was born in Weng im Innkreis. His memorial stands on the square in front of the town hall.

Finsterer left behind many publications on almost all areas of surgery (especially gastric surgery and anaesthesia). He developed new surgical methods that were recognised internationally. One of his specialities was that he performed numerous gastric and intestinal operations under local anaesthesia only.
